are some of our current volunteer openings:
Curatorial Assistant - The secret is out: the real
reason most people get involved in museums is to
"get their hands on the stuff!" Here's
your chance to learn from the pros how to work with,
handle, move, and research the collections of the
Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical
Society. Join a group of volunteers and work on
special projects. This can be a regular or an occasional
- College students are welcomed as interns in the
following areas: oral history, history, and education.
These unpaid positions of 5-20 hours per week provide
valuable field experience within the students
area of study. Time frame: Summer and academic school
year; flexible hours.
Lawn Care and Maintenance - A good job for someone
who likes to be a "handy man" and work
4 or more hours a week with their hands. A person
who would enjoy performing maintenance on the Old
Tishomingo County Courthouse so future generations
can visit and see a vital part of Tishomingo County
history. A person who likes to build things out
of wood, take an idea from conception, then design
and build things like shadow boxes, back drops for
exhibits, maintain the lawn, grow rose bushes and
other plants to keep the grounds looking beautiful
during the growing season, and more. It would be
a plus for this person to love to work "outside"
and have a "green thumb."
Assistant - Join a dedicated group of TCHGS volunteers
and help manage the records, process new acquisitions,
re-shelve and re-house library materials, and assist
with other projects. This can be a regular or an
occasional volunteer opportunity.
- Researchers from all over the world contact TCHGS
by phone, mail, and e-mail with research questions.
Volunteer researchers work with staff to answer
questions and assemble research materials. Training
- This is an all-time favorite way to get to know
your Historical & Genealogical Society better.
Receptionists greet guests, answer phones, register
researchers, work in the gift shop, and give museum
tours. They also provide office support to staff,
assisting with mailings, photocopying, and data
entry. This is a regular volunteer opportunity,
or you can be on-call to help as needed.
- Do you live too far away to volunteer on-site?
Then consider typing one of the many projects we
have going to preserve and share the fine history
of our County. Projects range from one page to a
whole book and can be transmitted electronically.
